Chapter 3: he was currently in a very strange state, his mind was on fire, and his heart was cold.
Wei Qian was afraid that the "Fallen Dog Hero" was not dead and would be in unbearable pain for the rest of it's life, so he thoughtfully smashed the dog's head with a brick. He continued until the dogs head was completely smashed to bits. He panted as he threw down the brick and wiped the dog's blood on his hand on the wall.
It was only then that he had a chance to look up at the pup who had caused him all this trouble, but the ungrateful little pup had snatched the can whilst he was beating the dog, held it in his arms and wolfed it down.
Wei Qian's eyes were so murderous that the little boy began to tremble. He looked at Wei Qian’s pair of big black eyes. A tiny stream of canned soup slipped out of the corner of his mouth, and he immediately reached out to fearfully wipe it away. He licked his hand clean.
The unnamed fire in Wei Qian's heart burned at an even higher intensity, and he wanted to kick kid's head down and make him lick his shoes clean.
Seeing this horrible gaze, the little boy thought that Wei Qian wanted to snatch away his can, he immediately became alert, hugged the can tightly, stood up leaning against the corner of the wall, and assumed a heroic posture as though wanting to defend his territory to the death.
Wei Qian was suddenly discouraged and wondered why the child was defending something as insignificant as a can.
He spat at the ground, turned and walked away.
During the past few days, Wei Qian did not waste his precious holiday. He went to practice opening booths with Mazi and Third Fatty during the day, sold pornographic videotapes, and found a job at the billiard hall at night, earning ten yuan a day for monitoring the games.
He found out that the pup he met that day seemed to have made his home in an alley full of rubbish. Every time Wei Qian went out, he would see him looking for his dinner in the garbage.
When Wei Qian passed by, if he were in a good mood, he would occasionally throw the kid a steamed bun.
Wei Qian had always been hostile toward his biological parents. Children learn how to interact with society from the way they interact with their parents, so it was very difficult for him not to hate society. His love was rarer than the chance of rain to appear in spring up north. The reason why he occasionally looked at the little child differently was that he was observing the child.
He found that not only did the little boy have fully formed arms and legs, no physical disability, no cognitive issues, but he was also taller than ordinary children, yet he didn’t stand out much. However, his eyes were black and bright, shouldn’t he have been much worse off? If he was really an orphan, he should’ve been sent to a care home. With his age and condition, he would definitely be adopted.
The little boy was wandering outside. Wei Qian guessed that the little boy had a guardian, but the guardian abused him, so he ran away on his own. Or that he was kidnapped and trafficked at an early age, and managed to escape.
Either way, he had to escape because others treated him badly. If he didn’t manage to he wouldn’t be alive. Wei Qian could understand that feeling, and he might’ve even felt sorry for both of them.
Of course, even if he felt sorry for the other, Wei Qian occasionally felt sorry for little things when he was in a good mood. Most of the time, he kept his heart cold and sharp.
And it was his sporadic kindness that caused trouble.
That day, Wei Qian's high school entrance examination results were released. He did well on the exam, He got 20% higher than the required score for one of the best high schools in the city. He was able to rank in the top 10 within the district. If it was someone else, their parents would have to treat them. Wei Qian didn't buy steamed bread buns for dinner, instead, he bought a bag of steamed meat buns to celebrate.
Wei Qian thought that he should’ve been happy, but he wasn’t. In his heart, he felt two heavyweights. One was the high cost of going to high school, and the other was the anxiety he would feel, no matter how good he was…
He tried to make himself ignore it, so he was currently in a very strange state, his mind was on fire, and his heart was cold.
As he passed by, he casually threw a steamed meat bun at the little boy next to the garbage dump and mocked himself: Whelp, I can never get that back now.
Unexpectedly, the little boy did not behave as predicted. He wolfed down the steamed meat bun in two bites. Then both him and the steamed bun in his belly relentlessly chased after Wei Qian.
Like a little stray cat, he recognized whoever fed him a mouthful of sausage.
Wei Qian looked back and was surprised. His heart said that this turn of events wasn’t good, and now he had to buy one and get one free.
His heart had already been hardened, and he became impatient as he was being followed. He repeatedly turned back and viciously cursed at the boy, pushed the boy to the ground, and even gestured to beating him, but the other party still persistently followed Wei Qian all the way to his house.
Wei Qian’s house originally belonged to his grandfather, that is, the father of his dead mother. His grandfather died whilst his mother was still alive, so the house was passed down to her, and now that she was dead, it had belonged to him this past year.
The old apartment building was in a typical urban shantytown. Downstairs was a garbage dump and terribly messy. (1) The temperament and income of the neighbourhood were generally below the average, and many people who lived here were not very friendly. Righteous and selfish, warm-hearted and unfriendly, they lived in strange harmony within the poverty and backwardness of this residential area.
For example, the single old woman who lived at the opposite Wei Qian was relatively unfriendly. Every time she saw Wei Qian, she began to roll her eyes from afar, and then slam the door as if she had seen something unclean, and sometimes deliberately left her garbage in front of his house.
At first, Wei Qian was too lazy to bother with her. He was a teenager with a little child, it was enough to worry about that every day, and he didn't bother to pay attention to such trivial matters.
Moreover, why should the poor make it more difficult for the poor?
Later, Wei Qian understood that the poor can only make it difficult for the poor, and only the poor. Otherwise, what else could they do?
His mother was a bitch, so he was raised as the son of a bitch. In theory, the curses the old lady would throw at him were correct.
But today was different.
He didn't do anything wrong. Even from a traditional point of view, he was better than everyone else. Why was he the only one who had to live such a hard life?
His excellent results in the high school entrance examination pulled his upper body into another world, while his lower body was still in an endless swamp, this not only let him see the boundless world but also made him unable to break away from his inherent identity and social class.
Even if he were like Third Fatty and Mazi, a purebred dreg of society, he wouldn’t be so miserable.
Wei Qian's overheating brain and cold heart finally pushed him to a breaking point. He stared down at the smelly rubbish in front of his doorway. Blue veins bulged out of his arms. His eyebrows looked like his mother’s, but he was far less beautiful than her. The hatred and gloom that he felt all-year-round became his natural temperament, so handsome that it was eye-catching, but also so gloomy that he seemed threatening.
The teenager Wei Qian squatted down silently, picking up the discarded fruit peels and decaying leaves in front of his house and packing them up.
The little boy who followed him didn’t know what was happening and watched from the side.
Wei Qian silently carried the garbage, taking two steps, and suddenly he didn't want to do it anymore. He spontaneously threw the garbage in his hand at the door of the old woman who lived opposite of him, turned his head and yelled at the boy: "What the fuck are you looking at?!"
The little boy was startled and instinctively took a step back.
Wei Qian said viciously, "Little bastard!"
The little bastard leaned his back against the corner and looked at him cautiously with his eyes wide open.
Wei Qian took a deep breath, and he tried hard to suppress the evil fire in his heart. As an "adult", he did not want to lose his temper in front of a little boy.
However, at this moment, he found that he could not help himself, even his eyelids were twitching.
After all, he was not a real adult.
Wei Qian suddenly turned around without warning, picked up a big stone from the ground, and smashed it against the window of the old woman, the broken glass fell to the ground, followed by a scream that erupted out of the house.
Wei Qian yelled, "Listen to me, old woman. I didn't argue with you in the past because you were 70 or 80 years old and weren’t going to live for much longer. But now, if you come near me again, I'll fucking destroy your whole family!"
The old woman screamed stubbornly from the room, and she obviously didn’t take the barely grown boy seriously.
Without saying a word, Wei Qian turned around, took a kitchen knife out of his house and kicked open her door. This directly broke her door lock, only leaving a metal chain dangling. The teenager held the kitchen knife and swung hard at the door, with a pale face and red eyes. He looked like a crazy murderer, and he frightened the cursing old woman into tears.
From then on, the old woman began to avoid Wei Qian, spreading rumours that he was a murderer, but the old woman no longer dared to swear in front of Wei Qian and never threw rubbish at his doorstep.
it's natural for those to bully the weak but fear the strong.
Back then, Wei Qian's deadly appearance frightened the old woman, but he failed to scare the little boy. The little boy still determinedly stood in front of his house.
Wei Qian finished his threat. With a bang, he slammed his door in front of the little boy and locked him out. The little boy wandered outside alone for a while. Finally, he bent down and picked up the bits and pieces of rubbish left at Wei Qian's doorstep, packed it up and threw it away.
He even picked up a few twigs, tied them together and swept the ground.
Then he curled up at the door like an unwanted puppy and slept all night.
